What exactly does a copywriter do?

While most marketers, advertisers, public relations people, journalists and related-industry natives are quite familiar with the term copywriter, have an idea of what a copywriter does, and even know a few copywriters, it’s not a role that many people have a good handle on.

In this article, we’ll dive deep into what it means to be a copywriter, and hopefully also show you what a difference these strange birds can make to your business.

What’s the difference between copywriting & content creation?

If you’re an entrepreneur or small to medium business owner, you’ve probably heard the terms copywriter and/or content creator bandied about in connection with marketing materials, website content, landing pages, blog articles, and social media posts.

And you may be wondering whether there is a difference between these two roles? Do you need one or the other… or both? Can one person do both? And, most importantly, which one will get the best results for your business?

What do professional writers charge in Australia?

Professional writers’ rates vary depending on the level of experience of the writer and complexity of the task. Professional writers based in Australia may cost a little more than some of their overseas counterparts, but there are very good reasons for that.

For starters, they have a powerful grasp of Australian English, a unique understanding of the Australian marketplace, and the ability to write specifically for Australian audiences.

FAQs

If you have any questions about copywriting, content creation, SEO, ghostwriting, writing, editing, and publishing a book, or any other writing-related questions, please feel free to reach out to me and I’ll be happy to answer them.

There are a number of questions that come up quite a lot, and I’ve answered these here for convenience sake. This is far from an exhaustive list, so please do get in touch if you’d like greater clarification and/or want to chat.

I get this a lot when I tell people what I do for a crust, and the answer is no. It’s a question of homonyms. Copywrite and copyright are two words that sound the same, but have very different meanings.

Copyright is the legal right to a piece of intellectual property, whereas copywriting is what I do.

Copywriting involves reaching out to people with a particular need(s), telling them how a certain product/service meets their need(s) and inspiring them to invest their time, energy or money in the product/service in question.

Yes, they can. I’m living proof. Although the style of writing is a little different, good writers are aware of this and are able to adapt their writing style accordingly.

In fact, although they are not the same, copy and/or content work synergistically, and they have vital roles to play in any successful marketing strategy.

Content engages prospects and customers. It increases brand awareness and builds brand loyalty, whereas copy evokes the emotions necessary to drive people to take action, generating quality leads, driving sales and maximising your ROI. For more information on this see our blog post, What’s the difference between copywriting & content creation?

The difference between hiring a professional copywriter or content creator and doing the writing yourself, is the same as the difference between getting your mum to cut your hair and getting a professional stylist to do it. They can both cut hair, but it’s obvious who’s going to give you the best results.

The same goes for writing. Professional copywriters and content creators spend years honing their skills so that they’re able to produce quality content that showcases your business in the best possible light and persuades people to take action and become loyal clients.
